There was something distinctly disturbing about silence, Marietta decided. As someone who operated best in silence and used the shadows as cover, she was well aware of how people could hide themselves away. It wasn't that she was paranoid per say, she was just all too aware of what silence could mean and, at this school, when it was silent there was usually something wrong. Of course that wasn't the case here, instead it was just because she was in the library and, as incredibly creepy as she found it, she was in need of a book and had little time right now to go try and find it in a shop. She didn't really read, not having much patience to sit quietly for long periods of time, but she'd promised her sister she would at least attempt to read The Wind in the Willows. Marietta had a feeling she was going to end up regretting it.
Having little idea of where to look, Marietta just browsed the bookshelves, assuming she'd come across it sooner or later. Hearing a quiet thump, she looked up from the books to see Indigo climbing up the bookcase and knocking off books as he went. "Indigo be careful!" Marietta hissed, picking up the fallen books and placing them back on the bookshelf. I'm always careful, Mary, he replied innocently, looking down at her from where he was no perched on top of the bookcase. Sighing, Marietta glanced at Indigo, annoyed, before moving to another bookcase to continue her search. Indigo followed, jumping from the top of one bookcase to the next, much to Marietta's annoyance. "Would you get down from there," she said, hands on hips as she looked at the little monkey who shook his head. I like it up here, he replied stubbornly. Mary scowled, hoping he wouldn't knock anything else over as she once again began looking for the book.

she's writing, she's weaving, conceiving a plot, it quickens, it thickens Lillian liked the quiet of the library. She had come a long ways from when she was a bookworm, terminally shy and timid, but she still loved books and reading. They did not offer her the same level of comfort as being surrounded by plants or burying her feet in rich earth, but they still offered her a certain degree of comfort. With Nadezdha napping out of the heat of the noonday sun, Lily had thought it was the perfect time to visit the library. Her slender fingers, tanned by two months of sun, ghosted over the bindings of each book as she passed from case to case, squeezing between the narrow aisles of the crowded room. Everything smelled like paper, glue, and pure age in the library; the combined scent was not exactly as pleasant as flowers, but it was still a nice smell in her opinion. Familiar. Comforting. The books she passed were certainly old familiar friends, ones from the time before she'd had any other friends on which to rely. Above all else, the library was cool, much cooler than outside. She enjoyed the heat, just not constantly.
A sound above her head captured Lillian's attention. She looked up and spied the form of a small monkey scrambled across the tops of nearby bookcases. It wasn't hard to recognize who it was. Indigo, Marietta's daemon, was known as a troublemaker and wasn't always very popular due to his antics. However, Lily smiled at the sight of him. Marietta couldn't be too far away, so the groundskeeper began peering amongst the shelves, going from one to another and then another until she found the security guard at last. "Marietta! It's so nice to see you;" Lily said, offering the younger woman a kind smile. Though she didn't say as much out loud, she was quite surprised to find athletic Mary in the institute library of all places.

Marietta wasn't sure how quickly she'd been expecting to find the book really, part of her had been hoping it would only take five minutes. Naturally, she'd greatly underestimated just how big the library was and just how many books it actually contained. Honestly she was starting to think that maybe it would have been easier to just lie and say she'd read it but she had never been able to tell her sister anything other than the truth. She had been concentrating so hard on finding the book that Lily took her by surprise and she jumped slightly as Indigo snickered, clearly having seen the grounds keeper approaching and chosen to neglect to let Mary know. "Lily, hey!" Marietta said with a grin, turning to face the girl and pulling her into a hug. "It's nice to see you too, how are you?"
Indigo groaned, already seeing this was going to take even longer. "Just ask her were the book is so we can leave," he told Marietta and she pulled away from the hug to look up at him, smirking. "You didn't have to come," she reminded him. Indigo had been the one who had refused to let her go alone, claiming it would be more fun to go together. He was, apparently, beginning to realise his mistake but was still too stubborn to just leave. It was probably for the best really, Marietta would rather have him here annoying her than out running round causing havoc for other people. This way she could at least keep an eye on him.
"I'd say it's a surprise to see you here but it's probably more surprising to see me," Mary said with a laugh, turning her attention back to Lillian. This definitely wasn't a place she visited often and although most people not realise this was a strange occurrence Marietta was sure Lily would.

she's writing, she's weaving, conceiving a plot, it quickens, it thickens Lily was surprised when Mary pulled her into a hug, though she couldn't say why. She knew that the younger woman was a physical person; that was part of the reason it was a surprise to find her in the library. Her surprise at the gesture was more likely rooted in her own insecurities. While she far from minded physical contact, she tended to be wary about giving it to others, not wanting to push anyone's boundaries. "I'm well! I've been enjoying the sun and I went back to New York to visit my parents, so that was nice;" she said. When Mary pulled away from her, Lily adjusted her tank top and then glanced at Indigo when she saw her friend talking to the daemon. Tricky monkey. "How are you and Indigo?" While she could make pleasant conversation with anyone, being a pleasant and non-confrontational person, she was genuinely interested in how the pair was doing. It had been a busy summer and they'd hardly gotten to talk which was a change from what was normal.
"Oh, and it's a nice surprise;" Lillian said hurriedly when Mary pointed out the slight absurdity of her presence in the library, matching the other woman's laugh with a warm smile. "You simply have interests that are different than . . . books." She would never call Mary unintelligent, but then again, she would never call Mary an intellectual either. She was Mary, the bold, loud, competitive, and confident. "What are you doing in here, if you don't mind me asking? Enjoying the quiet?" Though she didn't laugh, that second question was a bit funny. Lily was the one who tended to like quiet.

Marietta wasn't used to not seeing her friends for long periods of time so to say she'd missed Lillian would be a bit of an understatement. For most of the summer they hadn't seen each other, presumably because they'd both been busy. Marietta had, at least, done quite a bit this summer. It had been nice to come back to the Institute if not a slight disappointment. She enjoyed the adventures she could have when on holiday but she did find herself missing the school after a while and it was always a . "Oh that's great! I'm glad you've been enjoying yourself," Mary said, smiling. "We're fine, Indigo is being a pain as usual," she replied, laughing fondly as Indigo made an indignant noise and turned his back on her. "Went down to Florida to visit my sister, travelled around a bit and helped my dad out with some birthday parties." Her dad, having been a performer when he was younger, still occasionally did small little tricks for birthdays and Marietta loved helping out when she could. Of course he was getting older now, it wasn't so easy for him to do it by himself any more and her mum was still trying to convince him to retire completely to no avail.
Mary smiled, shaking her head. "I think the librarian might disagree with you there." She was never the quietest person and coupled with Indigo the noise only ever got worse, it was a surprise to her that she was still allowed to come in here, really. Although she came here very little her visits were usually disastrous enough to warrant a telling off. Today, thankfully, seemed to be going reasonably well. "Yes, because I enjoy the silence so much," she said sarcastically, her tone light. "I'm looking for The Wind in the Willows, my sister keeps nagging me to read it and what sort of person would I be to disappoint her? Don't happen to know where I could find it, do you?" Mary asked hopefully. Indigo climbed down from the bookshelf, situating himself on Marietta's shoulder and looking equally as hopeful.

she's writing, she's weaving, conceiving a plot, it quickens, it thickens Lily nodded along when Mary talked about her summer, listening intently with her expression open and jovial. At times, she had a tendency to seem overly engaged, but it was never actually so; she merely cared a ridiculous amount for those around her. Part of Lillian even desperately wanted to tell Mary that she was a wonderful person and that the librarian had no reason to dislike her when the younger woman playfully disparaged herself, but Lily pushed that desire out of the forefront of her mind. Years ago, such an urge would have come bursting out, if she'd had the nerve to speak at all, but now she knew how to let things go. Marietta did not need her constant mothering, though the guard did on occasion need a few words of advice. Instead she merely smiled and shook her head, knowing that Mary was being silly. She then pursed her lips slightly and shook her head again at the younger woman's sarcasm about enjoying the quiet. It had been an unlikely guess and she knew it, but sarcasm was not her favorite quality in Mary.
Despite Lily's barely visible disapproval at the sarcasm, she brightened quickly. "Wind in the Willows? Of course! It'll be in fiction under G;" she said in her cheery way, pointing towards the back shelves of books. She gave Indigo a smile now that he had decided to make an appearance and join them as lowly people on the ground. "Come on. I'll show you the way." At a leisurely pace, she started to navigate between the narrow aisles. She passed books upon books, but she didn't stop until the back of the room; there the shelves were labelled fiction. Peering at the shelf in front of her, she mumbled something about the letter N to herself. "It'll be that way;" she said, pointing left. "You know, there's also a catalog you access from the school website." She tried to say it gently and casually so as to insure that Mary wouldn't be offended.
